Welcome people in

I’d been working in health communications for 15 years when someone finally explained my job to me.

It happened five years ago, when I met one of my professional heroes at a conference.

Reader, I sat down and introduced myself. Who does that?

We talked for 20 minutes (me low-key fangirling the whole time) about the intersection of communication science and corporate communications. I never wanted it to end.

Then she casually said something that transformed how I understood my work: “My job is to welcome people in. Not to dumb it down.”
